Steve "Greek" Vaniadis was born August 29, 1938 and peacefully died on August 10, 2010 after a brief, but valiant flight with leukemia. Faithful to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, he was a man of action who served others unselfishly. Greek never met a stranger and was always willing to listen and share his story. On January 13, 1976, Greek married Denise, or "Nisee" as he called her. For thirty four years, she cherished her role as his bride, and they were each other's best friend. Each day was like a first date and spending time together was their favorite pastime. Greek loved his friends. He expressed his opinions readily, and they always knew where he stood on an issue. His "Greekisms" were famous and always good for a laugh. He loved the men in his breakfast groups, and they stood by each other faithfully. He served the First Baptist Church of Owasso in various Sunday school positions, but his favorite was cooking for the kids at Falls Creek.
Greek received his sociology and restaurant management degrees from the University of Michigan, and he had a variety of careers. He retired as a machinist at American Airlines in 2007, but had a lifelong passion for guns, gunsmithing, and hot rods. He loved anything with horsepower. His latest dream was to build an airplane. He left several unfinished projects. Relationships were very important to Greek. In addition to Denise, he is survived by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Josie and Scott Stelle. To Greek, Josie was his "Little Sis." Greek loved Isaiah 41:10: "Do not fear, for I am with you. Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you. Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand." The Bible verse strengthened him and ultimately he embodied it.
Greek faithfully served his country through the U.S. Army and maintained a military bearing for the rest of his life. Greek died as he lived, with humor, love, and a fight to the finish. He will be remembered.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., Thursday, August 12, 2010 at First Baptist Church in Owasso. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, August 13, 2010, at the First Baptist Church in Owasso with Dr. Roger Ferguson officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Mission Owasso, c/o First Baptist Church, 13307, East 96th Street North, Owasso, OK 74055. Arrangement and services were entrusted to Mowery Funeral Service of Owasso. www.moweryfs.com
